cfda: My work has had an impact on fashion in the following areas: Fashion + Architecture - My work has been widely acknowledged as evocative of architectural principles and modernist in the selection of materials, development of details, and minimalist attitude. The shapes and forms that I innovated in that context have had an indelible influence on fashion. My theories have helped define ongoing conversations on the subject and influenced how fashion as a design discipline is being viewed today. Urban Nomad - I dress the urban nomad, a term I coined in 1996 while observing the people passing on the street in front of my window and looking at the denizens traveling through the twenty-first century environs of Renzo Piano’s Kansai International Airport in Osaka Bay. The term describes a system of clothing I designed for the built environment, allowing the wearer the greatest efficiency and freedom in global travel whether traversing from New York to Kuala Lumpur or Red Hook to Midtown.
